When I bought my D-17, it had special studs holding the wheels to the hubs. These studs have heads that were about1 1/2" inch long instead of about 1/2". There are threads inside of the the head of the same size and pitch as the stud. It looks like someone just bolted a standard D17 wheel with these studs in addition to the one that was already there. It could be done. I don't know how it worked. I'd expect it to be too weak since there is no hub center ring to carry the weight. And I've never seen this kind of stud since.
